EXCERPTS: Dodging Temptation by Every Flynn

Excerpt #1:

Twenty minutes and half a carton later Harper and Dodge were facing each other as they sat on the stainless steel prep table in the middle of the kitchen with the carton of mint chocolate chip between them, each armed with a spoon. Hed ditched the shoes, rolled up his cuffs—revealing sinewy forearms that made her heart stutter—and told stories about how he ended up with the first name Dodge City.

“So all of you are named after old cowboy towns?”

The idea of it was totally bizarre and endearing. Her being named Harper had scandalized her grandparents. Dodge City would have given them each a heart attack.

“Yep, my mother loves a theme.” He shook his head and laughed. “Stone is short for Tombstone and Griff is short for Fort Griffin.

She scooped up a spoonful of ice cream, now melted more than when theyd started their midnight snack, and a line of green slipped over the edge. She stopped it with her finger before it could drip down to the table and licked the evidence off. “Did the other kids make fun of you growing up?”

When he didnt answer right away she looked up. His mossy green eyes had darkened, and his gaze was locked in on her mouth. A flush burned its way up from her toes, and she scrambled to think of something to say before her panties spontaneously combusted. “For your n-n-name…” She stumbled over the words. “Did they tease you about your name?”

He winked and smirked, all cocky confidence and testosterone-fueled sex appeal. “Only once.”

If she could have gotten pregnant from a look, shed be scheduling an appointment with her OB/GYN in the morning. Time to get out of this kitchen before the little seed of a romantic notion May Loving had planted took root and grew into the last thing Harper needed in her life right now.

Shed spent her entire life up until eight months ago living by a script shed never had any say in, let alone took part in writing. Neither the universe nor a my-way-or-the-highway hottie like the corporate cowboy here was taking her back there. She was her own woman now.

“You look like youre getting ready to wrestle a buffalo,” he said.

“I hope not.” Her denial came out far too soft and breathy for a woman only experiencing a sugar high.

Then Id suggest cleaning up a bit.” Dodge swiped his thumb across the corner of her mouth—soft and slow, coming away with a dab of mint chocolate chip on his thumb, which he sucked off. “The buffalo around here have a real hankering for ice cream.

It took everything she had not to press her fingers to her tingling skin where hed caressed her, as if her own touch could erase the sizzling sensation his had caused. It was only on that small space where her lips met, but it was the only thing she could feel. Her gaze held his, and her breath caught. There was no mistaking the want in his eyes. The air around them thickened, and words failed to materialize in her head.

Maybe it was the intimacy of the half-lit kitchen or the late hour, but she leaned forward over the carton between them without really meaning to. It wasnt much, an inch or two, but it was more than enough. He mirrored her move. Her eyes fluttered shut, and her lips parted in anticipation, then she detected a hint of icy mint before his warm lips covered hers.

Excerpt #2:

Dodge stopped beside Harper, looked at the room number placard next to her closed door, and shook his head. “Youre in the honeymoon suite?”

“That would explain the size of the bed.” And the special lotion and oil sampler basket shed found on the bedside table.

“My mom is always so subtle. Whatever she says, ignore her.”

“What about the universe wanting us to get married?” she asked, the need to prolong their talk and needle him a little overwhelming her better judgment.

He looked up at the ceiling and sucked in a deep breath. “Oh God, she told you.”

“Like you said…” Harper giggled at Mays antics. “Shes very subtle. Dont worry. I told her I wasnt interested.”

“Not even a little bit?” He turned and edged closer, putting his hands on the doorframe on either side of her shoulders. He didnt touch her, didnt block her in.
Her skin tingled, making her feel every inch of flesh he wasnt touching. If she wanted to, all she had to do was slide her key card across the lock, and she could escape into the safety of her room. She could get away from the constant tug of attraction pulling her closer to him, the unsettled need that made her clench her thighs, and the way he managed to piss her off and turn her on in alternate breaths. The thing was, she didnt want to, and, judging by his knowing smirk, he knew it. But that wast what made her core pulse. It was the look in his eyes again. Hungry. Determined. Possessive. The air practically sparked around them as desire flooded her body—and he hadnt even touched her yet.

He leaned in, his lips close to her earlobe, but maddeningly far away. “Not even after last night?”

“Whats one kiss between enemies?” She couldnt seem to help herself from taunting him, seeing how far she could push him before his control cracked.

His hands slid lower on the door, moving from her shoulder level until they were even with the small of her waist. Still he didn’t touch her. “Is that what we are?”

The key card slipped from her grasp, falling to the carpet in silent surrender. “It felt like that last night.”

“And now?” he asked. He tilted the angle of his head so his lips were just shy of making contact with hers.

Dampness soaked through the center of her yoga pants, and her heart hammered in her chest. “No comment.”

Well…” He pushed his body up against her, flattening her between the solid door and his own thick hardness. “Actions do speak louder than words.”

His mouth came down on hers, obliterating any possibility of doing something other than kiss him back just as demanding, just as aggressive, and just as determined to control the situation. If he was looking for someone who sat back and meekly accepted, then he was kissing the wrong girl. Those days were gone for Harper. No one was going to manipulate her into doing their bidding ever again. She was her own woman with her own plans, and right now they all centered around Dodges hefty bulge pressing against her.

“So fucking hot I almost forgot why youre here. If only…” Dodges lips brushed across her jaw as his fingers skimmed down the length of her arms until his hands circled her wrists. “But both of us cant be in charge.” He whipped her arms upward in one fluid motion, wrapping a single hand around her wrists and pinning them above her head.

She watched him through half-closed lids and pressed her shoulder blades against her room door, rubbing her hot center against his thigh. “That doesnt seem fair.”

His eyes darkened with lust, and he repositioned his leg, giving her a better angle to press against him. “You know that life never is.”

Bracing herself against the door behind her, she raised up on her tiptoes and undulated against his hard thigh. The stretch Spandex of her yoga pants moved with her as she twisted against him, tempting him and torturing herself with a kind of touch that was good but not quite good enough.

“Fuck me, youre not wearing panties, are you?” The words came out in a pained groan.

Score one for her. “Never with yoga pants.”

His gaze dropped to where her hard nipples strained against her cotton tank top. “A bra?”

She shook her head. His nostrils flared with desire, and his lips turned up in a predatory smirk that promised every bad thing she could ever want—and she wanted it all.

Excerpt #4 (shorter)
“Aint life a bitch?” she muttered to herself.

“You have no idea,” a male voice said from the other side of the stacks.

Harpers surprised yelp bounced off the high ceiling, and her heart slammed against her ribcage as she jumped up from her chair. A man stood just inside the librarys door. Tall—at least six-foot-four—he had warm brown skin, thick muscles, a movie star face and moss green eyes that sent a jolt of electricity beaming straight down to the center of her cherry red panties. Hed scared the bejesus out of her, but that didnt account for the awareness keeping her feet nailed to the ground. Sweaty, in running clothes, and more than a little bit pissed off, he had an aura of power and danger that twisted girls up and left them begging for more. Harper inhaled a shaky breath. She might need to sit down.
